Gayatri Devi stepped into politics in 1962. she contested from the Independent Party of C. Rajagopalachari and became a Member of Parliament. At that time, he defeated his opponent by such a huge margin on behalf of the Congress that the name was also recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. It is said that during the Emergency in 1971, Gayatri Devi had to spend time in prison. He was in Delhi’s Tihar Jail for nearly five months. Five years later, she retired from politics.

Gayatri Devi died on July 29, 2009.
